Back To School 2017 in Cobb & Paulding Counties

This time next week, students in Cobb & Paulding County will be preparing to return to school. And there is so much to do to get ready. Local stores have already set up their back to school displays. Local big box stores are offering several basic supplies for less than $1.

Setting up a homework station, organizing supplies, school uniforms, scheduling appointments for physicals and more have probably taken over your calendar. Here are some helpful tips and checklists to help you through the next few weeks.

School Supplies

Check with your school to see if they provide a list of school supplies your child may need, or confirm if your local retailer has your school’s list available.

July Fourth Celebrations Around West Cobb – Things To Do

July Fourth Celebrations will be taking place all around West Cobb, and you can even attend more than one since some are on different days. Growing up in small towns in northern New Jersey, I remember standing on the sidewalk watching the parade, waving a flag as veterans, neighborhood business floats, and marching bands parading by. In high school we lived across the street from where the holiday festivities were held and sat on blankets in our front yard to watch the evening fireworks display. The holiday is steeped in history, but also in so many childhood memories. Living in West Cobb often reminds me of those days as I attend neighborhood festivals and celebrations. And while I love the proximity of a “big city”, I cannot imagine living anywhere else! My only dilemma now is which celebration to attend.

In addition to the community events below, several neighborhoods will host their own celebrations for residents. Check with your HOA to see what’s going in your neighborhood.

If you want to venture around metro Atlanta , here are some festivities you might want to look into. Some of these begin or occur prior to July 4th, require advance registration and/or admission fees, so please click the links to learn more.

Swimming Pools – Things To Do Around West Cobb

It’s that time of year. Throughout our area there are several lifestyle neighborhoods that include swimming as one of their amenities. And now is the time when those swimming pools begin to open for the season. Residents pay an annual or monthly fee to their HOA and have the privilege of enjoying these amenities. If you don’t live in one of these neighborhoods, you can still enjoy swimming activities this summer at one of the many public pools, water parks and clubs around our area. There are a variety of fees including daily passes and more, so check with the park for more information. There is also the option of purchasing an annual pass to Whitewater at Six Flags on Cobb Parkway in Marietta or Acworth Slide where you can slide down the “world’s largest inflatable water slide” in Acworth.

If you haven’t checked out LakePoint Sports Complex in Emerson yet, you might want to this summer. There’s even a summer camp program at LakePoint for children ages 7-14.

Christmas Trees Around West Cobb

There is nothing quite like the smell of fresh pine filling your home during the holiday season, and a real Christmas tree can do that better than any candle or air freshener. Having a real tree is a tradition for many families, but if you haven’t had one before and are considering it, there are a few things you should know before you take it on. Residents around our neighborhoods love decorating for the holidays.

NOTE: make sure to read the important information at the end of this article about Christmas trees in West Cobb.

Real Trees, Real Mess

A real tree can make a bit of a mess in your home-you will have to vacuum up the dropped needles regularly. You will also have to keep fresh water in the tree stand and watch out for leaks or spills. There can also be other natural surprises in a real tree such as insects and spiders! While this is rarely a serious problem, it is something to keep in mind.

Repeated Cost Or One Time Cost?

Buying a “fake” tree is something you can invest in one year and use for many years to come. A real tree, on the other hand, will have to be replaced every year. The cost of a real tree depends on where you live and where you purchase it. Since we live in a place where pine trees grow freely, the cost will be much less, and the tree will last longer since it will be fresh.

The Hunt For The Perfect Christmas Tree

If you just have to have that perfectly shaped Christmas tree, you will find it easier to use in a fake tree. Still, hunting through a tree farm or forest for the elusive perfect natural tree is a lot of fun for many people, and if you aren’t too set on perfection you will probably find something pretty close. Just be sure the search is something you will enjoy. There are Christmas tree lots on several street corners around town. And then there are Christmas tree farms … but please make sure to ALWAYS call the farm or store BEFORE YOU GO to check on hours, prices, and inventory.

A real Christmas tree adds a certain ambiance and holiday spirit to any home, but it isn’t right for everyone. Consider the benefits as well as the possible problems with a real tree before you make a final decision on how to get your home ready for the holidays. Also, make sure to consider safety when decorating your tree.

Recycling Your Christmas Trees
in West Cobb

Residents can help keep West Cobb clean by recycling their Christmas tree. Cobb County participates in the Georgia’s annual Christmas tree recycling program – Bring One for the Chipper. Keep Cobb Beautiful sponsors free Christmas tree drop off locations after the holiday which will take at the following Cobb County Parks anytime after Christmas from 9 AM to 4 PM at the drop-off locations below, and at select Home Depot locations below only on the first Saturday in January. The mulch from these trees has been used for playgrounds, local government beautification projects, and individual yards. That’s just one of the many reasons why Cobb County is such a great place to live!

Drop-off locations:

  • Fullers Park
  • Lost Mountain Park
  • Noonday Creek Park
  • Sewell Park

For details on this year’s event and drop off locations, visit the website at http://www.keepcobbbeautiful.org/bring-one-for-the-chipper.

Even today, I find visiting homes decorated for the holidays such a great tradition. Living in metro Atlanta, there are several communities that offer holiday home tours.
