Dinner and a Movie

Not far from us, you can now enjoy dinner and a movie at the same time! A short ride up 92 to Woodstock Road in Roswell will take you to The Movie Tavern in the recently renovated Sandy Plains Village. The Movie Tavern offers first run movies along with an eclectic menu offering plenty of items to satisfy your appetite.

You no longer have to select a restaurant for before or after the movie, you can enjoy both at the same time. The theater offers stadium seating along with a dining table for you to comfortably enjoy both your meal and the movie. I was also intrigued by their Breakfast and a Flick offering for weekend mornings, seems like a great way to enjoy a weekend morning, especially with family and friends.

Questions? Here are some of the questions I had and the answers I found on their website:

Is the meal before, during or after the movie?

How expensive is this?

Can I make reservations?

Can I host a party there?

Brasstown Valley Inn | Celebrate the Holiday in the Mountains

This Thanksgiving, like holiday celebrations in the past, I joined my sister’s family in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. Cold evenings watching the sunsets over the mountain vistas reminds me of the amazing landscapes throughout our country. Spending time with my family reminds me of what I have to be thankful for, especially when it was the first time I had seen my oldest nephew, a US Marine, since he came home from his recent deployment. And I also enjoyed spending time with my younger nephew before he leaves for college. Yes, lots to be thankful for. But what I really wanted to share is how we spent Black Friday.

An annual tradition for my sister, we went to Brasstown Valley Inn in Young Harris, GA for their Thanksgiving Craft Fair and Luncheon Buffet. The assortment of American crafts was great from jewelry to homemade soaps to decorative crafts and more. But again, that’s not what I really wanted to share. What I want to share is the amazing resort itself.

A two hour drive from our area, the Brasstown Valley Inn & Resort, the winner of multiple Certificates of Excellence from Trip Advisor, offers an assortment of activities including golf, horseback riding, and the 7,500-square-foot Equani Spa, inspired by the area’s native Cherokee people, serves up, offering spa treatments and more.  The Inn itself is what you would expect of a mountain lodge with its massive fireplace in the main lobby and wrap around decks overlooking the incredible property and views.  And there are also several secluded cottages for families and groups seeking a more private, intimate atmosphere.

North Paulding Football Champions

All around our neighborhoods you notice that Friday nights take on a pride, as the high school football teams take on different towns for exciting games. North Paulding, the high school for most homeowners in the Cedarcrest area of Dallas, is a fairly new school. Built in 2007 to respond to the then current and anticipated population growth from 81613 residents in 2000 to 136,655 residents in 2009, North Paulding High School can now celebrate its first regional championship football season.

Last week, Chip Saye commented on the game in the AJC:

Football Championship[pullquote style=”left” quote=”dark”]North Paulding created a virtual four-way tie for first place in Region 5-AAAAA with a 31-28 victory against South Paulding, which had taken sole possession of first place and earned the first ranking in program history with an upset of Allatoona last weekend.[/pullquote]

The lights haven’t dimmed on our Friday night football season
And North Paulding’s First Regional Championship Title is the reason
An incredible season of winnings and scores
The playoffs are coming, the team deserves more
So cheers to the team and to their coach
Good luck going forward as the next games approach!

Not only did the team win the regional championship, but their weekly results are a testament to their skill! And congratulations to the others that helped support the team on its way to victory from the cheerleaders to the marching band to the all of the parents and the community. Friday night lights shine bright in our neighborhood for a little while longer.

Cabela’s Selects Acworth

On July 25, 2013 Cabela’s announced it’s plans to begin construction this fall with a scheduled opening in fall 2014 of their new store at Cherokee Village in Acworth. Their store will be an anchor in the new development being built in the northeast quadrant of I-75 and Highway 92. The 100,000 square foot store is expected to employ approximately 200 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees with most coming from Acworth and the surrounding area. According to the press release, the store will be built using Cabela’s next-generation layout, designed to surround customers in an outdoor-like experience with museum-quality wildlife displays. In addition to thousands of quality outdoor products, the store will include a large mountain replica, a Gun Library, Bargain Cave, Boat Shop, Indoor Archery Range, Deli and Fudge Shop.

For more information on the Cherokee Village, you can view their retail site plan at their website and keep updated on who else is coming to our neighborhood.

Lake Point – Premier Sports Vacation Destination Under Construction

As you turn left off of Cedarcrest onto Cobb Parkway North for about 5-7 miles, you will quickly arrive at the intersection of Highway 293. If you look immediately to your right, you will see the construction activity that will shortly begin to take shape as Lake Point Sporting Community, the largest and most comprehensive sports vacation destination in the world. The unique complex will comprise more than 1,200 acres featuring state-of-the-art sports venues for 27 of America’s favorite sports, and 5 million square feet of mixed-use development. On July 23rd, the Emerson City Council approved the Lake Point south campus plans which will soon expand area construction.

After three years of planning, Lake Point started the construction process in April of this year. The economic impact, upon completion, is expected to bring more than 4 million visitors a year and create more than 26,000 jobs. The South campus will be the first phase to be completed, with its first venue Terminus Wake Park scheduled to open later this year, followed by baseball and soccer/lacrosse venues in 2014 along with some of the retail venues including Bass Pro Shops in late 2014, early 2015.

Comprised of seven “districts”, the complex will offer 5 million square feet of mixed-use commercial development, including extensive retail, hotel, office, entertainment and medical components. A brief breakdown of the information from their website includes*:

  • District 1 – Medical Village offering medical treatment facilities, medical conference center, retail, quick serve restaurants
  • District 2 – Celebrating Baseball, this District will house Boom Town, Pennant Point and Diamond Walk, 8 Major League-sized baseball fields, including a 1728-seat stadium (with additional berm seating), 12 softball/youth baseball fields and a Miracle League field. The anchor tenant for Lake Point baseball is Perfect Game USA, baseball’s largest and most comprehensive scouting service.  A water park is also planned for the Northeast area of District 2, adjacent to I-75.
  • District 3 – Lacrosse & Soccer will be the highlight of District 3 which will include 14 multi-use fields, including a 2700-seat stadium, as well as a major strip of on-site hotels.
  • District 4 – Terminus Water Park will highlight District 4 at its entrance, but continuing through the District, visitors will be offered track & field, 10 basketball-size/20 volleyball-size courts for basketball, volleyball, wrestling, gymnastics, cheerleading, dance, and elite sports performance training.  At the south end of District 4 there will be 8 more Major League-sized baseball fields and 3 multi-sport lacrosse/soccer fields for Perfect Game USA and others.
  • District 5 – Adventure Ridge, as this District will be known, will be home to Bass Pro Shop as well as a massive ropes course and adventure zip line and 300 acres of green space with running, mountain biking and equestrian trails.
  • District 6 – Golf Academy and a 9 hole, Par 3 Golf Course will be joined with cabins and golf villas available to rent.
  • District 7 – Lake Point Landing incorporates the lake lifestyle known in the area and will feature a resort-style hotel and marina where guests can rent kayaks, pontoon boats and jet skis.

* UPDATE – Districts were the original plan and as LakePoint Sports has developed, the plans have been updated for this destination resort as can be seen on their website.

Friday Night Lights – It’s All About Football

It’s an American ritual. As the days begin to get shorter, the air becomes a little crisper and the school year begins, it is time for football. And all around the US, fans will be ready. Kickoffs in our area start:

[custom_list style=”list-1″]

  • NFL Season begins with the Ravens at the Broncos on September 5th
  • Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs Elon Phoenix on August 31
  • Georgia State kicks off their season against Samford at Georgia Dome on August 30

And then there is Friday Night Football. So much of an American tradition, that they have made movies about it and television shows. High school is a time to come of age, and the personal transformations of players on the field are reminiscent of the struggles we have as adults. The glory, excitement, defeat, disappointment and challenges of personal relationships. And as we moved on with excitement from that era, we looked to what was next. Yet as a new generation enters the field, we fill the stadiums and cheer them on. We sit with excitement as the field lights go on and the teams flip a coin to start the game. Many even enjoy the marching band that plays now, having forgotten a time when the athletes and the band were so far apart. Today we all tap our feet together as the drums lead the band down the field with their cadence.

Tonight, Friday night, it’s about sitting in the stadium and watching with pride and excitement as our high school players show us what team sports are all about. We don’t stop to think about the lessons learned, or storylines that use the American tradition as a backdrop. We’ll think about Remember the Titans, The Blind Side and Friday Night Lights another time. For now, in this moment, we’ll just join the cheerleaders in cheering on our team, our kids, our neighborhood. Because here, right now, it’s all about them and Friday Night Football.
