Authorized in 1941 under the Flood Control Acts (FCAs for flood control, hydroelectric power generation, water supply and water quality. The FCA of 1944 also authorized recreation with fish and wildlife management.

Lake Allatoona is one of the most frequently visited US Army Corps of Engineers lakes in the nation with over 6 million annual visitors. The lake currently offers 589 campsites, 188 picnic sites and offers 270 miles of shoreline. Visitors enjoy picnicking, swimming, camping, hunting, fishing, boating and wildlife observation.
