It’s that time of year – graduation parties, bridal showers, Mother’s Day – and what is a party without beautiful cakes and cupcakes, or pastries? Growing up, my uncle owned a neighborhood bakery, and my grandfather was a baker before I was born. So I was raised on fresh baked breads, beautiful cakes and OMG cookies! There was also a local neighborhood bakery in my hometown that made cupcakes for everyone’s birthday at school. Summer vacations spent in upstate NY, also offered an amazing bakery that made the BEST chocolate covered custard donuts (as well as several other yummy items), and sadly closed without sharing the recipe – anyone remember Katz’s Bakery in Monticello NY? The custard was so thick, you could eat it with a spoon. These were all local businesses with unique specialties and recipes that brought us all back for more – year after year.
Over the years, these neighborhood businesses were replaced with large chain stores which provide cakes for many events, and while their bakeries are good, they are not the same as the ones I visited growing up. Superstores became more convenient with one stop shopping. But what about when you wanted something unique? Not to worry, there are several places to get something special around West Cobb. Downtowns are being revitalized and small businesses are coming back. You can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee with a cupcake in Marietta Square at places like Warm Hugs, or Gabriel’s in Acworth, and others around NW Metro Atlanta. Just follow along as people ask on Facebook, or ask neighbors, or better yet, check out the list we curated below of brick & mortar bakeries, as well as specialty businesses, some of which are cottage food businesses.
Cottage food businesses are a delightful way for skilled home bakers to share their talents with the community. These passionate artisans, often moms or hobbyists with a knack for delectable treats, transform their kitchens into licensed mini-bakeries. Here, they whip up cakes, cupcakes, and cookies that are not only delicious but also made with love and meticulous attention to detail. By following strict food safety regulations, these cottage food entrepreneurs bring the joy of fresh-baked goods directly to consumers, one delectable bite at a time.
